Recently we had the chance to talk to one of our partners Dr. Rossella Spataro from Centro SLA (Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica) in Palermo who managed to successfully communicate with ALS patient Carmelina. Due to the lack of feedback it was difficult to judge Carmelina’s condition. mindBEAGLE – a system developed by Guger Technologies – enabled Dr. Spataro to communicate with her patient and gained new insights about the extent of Carmelina’s awareness and consciousness. The 6th International BCI Meeting took place from May 30th – June 3rd, 2016 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California, USA. The unique, highly interactive, student-friendly, retreat-like atmosphere and high-impact activities attracted more than 400 attendees. Steven Laureys is a Belgian neurologist recognized worldwide in the field of neurology of consciousness. His research is dedicated to neurological disability and neuronal plasticity in patients who suffer from brain damage. Steven is a testing partner within the ComaWare project, and uses the mindBEAGLE system for assessment and communication of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). Andy Weir is a friend of Brendan Allison, our Senior Scientist at g.tec – a great novelist and the author of “The Martian”, the hit movie directed by Ridley Scott in 2015. This sci-fi story is about a manned mission to Mars featuring Matt Damon, the NASA astronaut Mark Watney. This story shows the fascinating fight against the life-threatening circumstances by a man who is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew on Mars.

Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro is the director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, part of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University (JP). His research has contributed to investigation of human like robots and the interaction with humans. For his recent projects, he has been using g.Nautilus, the wireless EEG cap from g.tec, to control his robots. We had the chance to chat with Dr. Ishiguro about his work and his use of g.Nautilus.

g.Nautilus is g.tec’s new wireless biosignal acquisition system. Its design is completely different from all other devices and it sets a new standard of usability. The tiny and lightweight device is attached to the EEG cap to avoid cable movements and to allow completely free movements. Read more
